Do Registered Nurse Work From Home Jobs Really Exist?Work from home jobs are often considered a dream come true by many who wish to avoid the hectic morning commute and prefer to work in the comfort and privacy of their own home. However, when we think of work from home jobs, our minds typically wander toward the types of jobs involving computers, phones, or other desk related jobs.

Most people don’t realize nursing and other healthcare related positions are also a possible work from home option. Wait…those types of jobs simply don’t exist, right? Yes, they do! As surprising as it might be, registered nurse work from home jobs definitely exist!

Nurse Case Managers

One option for registered nurses seeking work from home opportunities is to become a case manager for hospitals, healthcare providers, or insurance companies. Nurse case managers help determine appropriate treatment plans for patients. Some of your main duties would likely include making doctor’s appointments and helping to schedule surgeries. In fact, a work from home nursing care manager requires a lot of phone time to discuss health issues with patients as well as coordinating care with other providers.

Opportunities in this field are expected to grow at a rate much faster than the average occupation, with a projected growth of 15 percent between 2016-26, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Similar to other RN nursing jobs, the median annual salary is $70, 694 for a nurse case manager.

To become a nurse case manager, clinical experience is required for this role, as well as an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing. Along with being comfortable making and receiving phone calls, nurse case managers should also be comfortable with technology.

Although a career as a nurse case manager is great, it’s not the only option to consider if you’re an RN looking to work from home.

1. Online Instructor

Online education is a rapidly growing field, leading to an increased amount of work from home opportunities. For the tech savvy nurse, especially one with teaching experience, they can utilize their skills in the area of distance education by choosing to work as an instructor, or even as a college course developer.

2. Nurse Writer

Medical writing isn’t easy, but if you have strong writing skills, consider a career as a freelance nurse writer or blogger. The tasks involved as a medical writer may include putting together promotional materials, press releases, journal articles, etc. As a blogger, you might create and write a lot of your own content, such as sharing personal tips, stories and career advice.

3. Insurance Claims

Many insurance companies need nurses, making it a viable work from home option. Insurance nurses perform many tasks such as reviewing cases, medical coding, insurance audits, and clinical research. They help decide whether or not certain procedures are covered, and how much money the insurance company is required to pay per claim.

4. Nursing Informatics

While IT jobs can often be done at home, the specific training involved with health IT might be something you learn in an office environment and then transition into a home-based position later, once a certain skill level is achieved.

5. Medical Call Center

This position typically requires the least amount of experience, and tends to offer less pay, but is something that many clinical nurses can easily transition to if they are serious about wanting to work from home. Call center nurses perform telephone triage, give medical advice, and check on a patient’s well being.
