You’re Not Just a Nurse: #NursesShareYourStethoscopes
The headlines are everywhere. You’re social media feeds are probably littered with articles about The View and the comments that co-hosts Joy Behar and Michelle Collins recently made concerning Miss Colorado Kelly Johnson and her talent contribution to the Miss America 2016 pageant. Many have had harsh, critical words to say to the co-hosts; others have had chosen to speak up for nurses and their vital importance within the medical community. By now, you’re probably familiar with the hashtags #nursesunite and #NursesShareYourStethoscopes and others like these.
In case you some how have managed to miss this news, take a minute to hear for yourself the degrading “jokes” that Ms. Behar and Ms. Collins decided to share with the rest of America. https://youtu.be/gRyJhos0nAQ

On the surface, this may just seem like a harmless joke meant to create some laughs on a daytime talk show that only cares about ratings. But, in the aftermath of the incident, there are nearly 4 million active nurses in the U.S. loudly declaring that nursing is a proud profession, and that those working professionals are never “just nurses.”
Here at Athena Career Academy, we are working tirelessly to train the next generation of working nurses to impact and transform patients in every area of the healthcare field. We are here to encourage you and tell you that, “No, you are never just a nurse.” You are a diamond in the rough; a rare breed; members of a very high calling.
Nurses are there when babies take their first breaths, and comfort patients and their families when a last breath is near. Nurses are critical thinkers and problem solvers; creatively managing complicated patient treatment plans, mediating for families and physicians, and encouraging stubborn patients to comply with wise medical advise. Nurses are there for first time mom’s coaching them on many vital jobs that many inexperienced moms are scared to tackle on their own. They are educators, proudly training new generations of nurses to care for people just like Joy Behar, Michelle Collins, and anyone else who under-appreciates the incredible work that comes from the nursing community.
Nurses exhibit a sense of strength, solidarity, and teamwork when the world jokes about their importance. And most importantly, nurses stand on the front lines every single day in hospitals, clinics, doctors offices, schools, nursing homes, outpatient care facilities, and long-term residential care homes, sacrificially and selflessly caring for the physical, emotional, and mental health care needs of those who are most vulnerable. Patients will spend only a few minutes with their physicians, surgeons, and doctors. But nurses are the ones who are there to manage the total treatment plan from start to finish. They are an indispensible part of total patient care.
This responsibility is nothing to shy away from, to downplay, or to be ashamed of. The world is filled with so much negativity, selfishness, and pain. Nurses help to make the world all the more better by pursuing such a high calling that most people couldn’t handle. So, stand tall, nurses, and unite. Show your stethoscopes and be proud that you are changing the lives of countless individuals who know the immeasurable contributions you make every day.
