Starting Nursing School and Pursuing Nursing as a Second Career

Posted On March 7,2016

Many individuals consider the possibility of pursuing nursing as a second career. With a current nursing shortage, now is a great time to pursue a career change to the health field. It is a rewarding career that provides decent income and also serves others in a way that is fulfilling.

If you have completed a bachelor’s degree in another field already, many universities will offer an accelerated nursing program that allows you got expedite the process. Both part-time and full-time nursing school programs are offered so that students can tailor the experience to what works best for them. If needed, one can pursue a nursing degree part-time so that there is still time to work as well. Medical field experience is not required for most nursing programs, but it can be helpful in courses as students are required to understand medical terminology and health conditions.

Nursing school as a Second Career - Toledo Practical NurseMany people fear that beginning a nursing career over the age of 40 is not possible due to the physical demands of a nursing job, but the National Survey of Registered Nurses recently reported that 45% of RNs are 50 years old or older, and the average age of all licensed nurses is 47. Many students are entering the field after having many years of experience in another occupation, and life experience can actually be helpful in serving one’s patients. Many older students can also bring a sense of energy to the job when they are grateful to be pursuing a change in career and looking forward to something new.

The physical demands of a nursing job include working on-call, sometimes on weekends or holidays. Nurses also remain on their feet for long periods of time and need to move and lift patients occasionally. When needed, they work with chronically ill patients and sensitive families and also are required to work in emergency situations. The demands of the field, however, are balanced with the unending rewards of helping patients heal and serving families of those who are hospitalized. Nursing can be a valuable career at any stage of life, and it remains a worthwhile choice for a second career for older adults ready to pursue something new.
